Better default avatars
Our default avatars for users who haven't set a picture as their avatar don't look that great. The letters are often too large for the circle, they look off-center, and the color palette isn't very attractive.
At small sizes, the avatars are also not very legible because the text is too thin:
We also only ever use one character to generate the avatar, even when users have a first and last name. This is a missed opportunity for making individual avatars more unique and therefore more easily recognizable.
I propose a new approach to default avatars, which consists of:
- rendering avatars at different sizes differently (to optimize for legibility at small sizes and good looks at large sizes)
- using 2 letters if the user has a first and last name
- a new, more consistent color palette
Spec for the different sizes:
Colors (open SVG in Inkscape and extract the colors directly from the avatars):
Development Tasks
-
change colors to new color palette -
change font to Cantarell Ultra-Bold -
change font sizes and alignment to the values detailed above (depending on the avatar's size) -
add a second character if the user has a last name
QA Tasks
-
new color palette looks as expected -
fonts look as expected -
avatars are rendered differently at different sizes -
users with last names have 2 characters in the avatar
