---
## Steps to reproduce
While Fractal's window is defocused (ex: hidden, on another workspace, etc.), have someone quote-reply to one of your messages in a group chat, triggering a desktop notification.
## Actual Results
Fractal shows a notification through GNOME Shell that contains the chatroom's name in the notification title, but a nearly useless notification body, because it contains:
* The sender's user name (which can be overly long), though that might be a necessity in the case of group chats (unlike in DMs, #1316)
* Your full username handle ID mention (useless)
* Your previous message quoted (useless)
* The actual contents of the reply being sent to you (what you most want to see in the notification)
Just like in #1316, GNOME Shell's notifications are too narrow to allow that level of noise to take precedence over the core contents of the notification. This is quite obvious in these two examples where it is impossible for me to see the actually see the message being sent to me, either because the username is super long, or because of the quoting of my own previously sent text...

## Expected Results
Maybe include the short version (without matrix server?) of the username sending the message as a prefix, followed only by the cleaned up essence of the message (no @ user mentions, no quoted parts, no URLs, etc.)

While Fractal's window is defocused (ex: hidden, on another workspace, etc.), have someone send you a 1:1 private message that triggers a desktop notification.
## Actual Results
Fractal shows a notification through GNOME Shell that contains the sender's user name twice: once in the notification's title (in bold) because the user is the room name, and a second time as a prefix to the message's contents in the body of the notification.
GNOME Shell's notifications are very narrow and don't have enough characters width to meaningfully allow this to be useful in this case; it is a waste of space and visual attention (I have to read / visually ignore the username a second time instead of directly reading the message's summary). As some users have fairly long display names, this can eat a significant chunk of the limited horizontal space. For example:
![image](/uploads/16393270355959f204b0bdd6f9ded707/image.png)
## Expected Results
Particularly in the case of 1:1 chats, I would expect only the message's core text contents (without sender username, without "target username mention" reply prefixes, and without "quoted reply") to be shown in the notification's body (since username = room name and is already in the title).
The corresponding group chats usecase is issue #1317.

When we are at the beginning of a room's history the first event we show is the `m.room.create` events that displays `This is the beginning of the room`. Besides, the `Timeline`'s state is `Complete` which shows another message that says `This is the start of the visible history`.
This results in very similar messages showing up, which makes this kind of confusing.
The latter is only useful if we don't have access to the whole history of the room (e.g. we can only see the history up to the point where we joined the room), so we should hide it in this case.

## Details
- Send a location in either direct chat or a multiperson room and it works the first time
- Upon trying again, it refuses to do anything
- Once sent once, you can't send in the same chat, a different chat on the same account, or on an entire other account (ie. until you restart the app, it will not work)
I ran the flatpak via the CLI but did not see any logs about it when trying multiple times.Fractal 6https://gitlab.gnome.org/World/fractal/-/issues/1279Make fractal build for MacOs2024-01-06T17:59:22ZTimoMake fractal build for MacOs<!-- Please note that Fractal was rewritten from scratch and our current focus is on the main branch

Since gtk4 is platform agnostic it would be great if Fractal could be build for macos as well.
This could also make it accessible to more developers.
## Development Tasks
The tasks split in two sections: disabling all linux specific packages so it builds.
Rebuilding all missing features (due to disabled packages) with alternative implementations for macos.
Dependencies that are not compatible with macos:
- lib-pipewire
- the secret storage used on linux
- ... (probably many more)
This is a related issue that also tries to compile Fractal on macos:

However, right after the sync was done, Fractal automatically initiated an E2EE verification with my other devices which, since i went on to do other chores, i couldn’t accept and it timed out. Fractal, however, didn’t tell me the verification failed; the Recovery button was disabled (reason beats me, i could have done that if all else fails), only the Reset button was active (which i obviously don’t want to use). My only option was to close Fractal, or go back to the login screen.
## Steps to reproduce
1. Open Fractal for the first time
2. Login and wait until the automated verification process starts
3. Make that verification time out.

The default size (seems to be 576×360) for the room details dialog is very small and doesn’t take advantage of the available screen real estate. It becomes unnecessarily cramped when entering one of the subdialogs such as the memberlist or the media gallery.
I suggest 720×540 as the new default, as it doesn’t look too big for the details and not too small for the gallery and member list.

gnome.modular.im homeserver, not sure what info I need here. I was able to reproduce it 2 times in a row, so looks like it's consistent. Once I entered the key in element, verification passed just fine.Fractal 6https://gitlab.gnome.org/World/fractal/-/issues/1148Device verification event not working2024-01-06T10:50:18ZCleo Menezes Jr.Device verification event not working<!-- This is a template to report bugs, select the corresponding template to request a new feature. -->

The edit icon seems to be a bundled icon using an older style, would be good to update it to the latest one from devkit or use the system one.![image](/uploads/f369a53b48037c777e5b4701b7cbb801/image.png)

When scrolling back in the room history of the Fractal room, Fractal crashed (seemingly without a core dump because of a bail out).
After a crash, I can scroll farther back and after two crashes I am no longer having issues (or it is the scroll speed)?
## Steps to reproduce
1. Open Fractal
2. Enter the [Fractal](https://matrix.to/#/#fractal:gnome.org) room
3. Scroll back until Fractal crashes (see also the log below)
