Workaround excessive memory use
This has been happening for years, but recently it seems a lot worse. When starting Evolution it takes a hundred gigabytes of memory, 6GiB of actual RSS. That's... a lot for an email client. It's very slow and keeps stalling, with GNOME shell offering to kill it.
PID USER PR NI VIRT RES SHR S %CPU %MEM TIME+ COMMAND
24766 dwmw 20 0 95.0g 6.3g 160896 S 55.8 20.2 61:57.24 evoluti+
It grows over time. This is Evolution 3.44.4-0ubuntu2 from Ubuntu 22.04.
I seem to recall that there used to be some way of getting a running total of the number of objects of each type, so we could try to work out where all the memory is going. Can't find it now. Suggestions for debugging?
