`F3` keyboard shortcut to focus the searchbar and select its contents
While I understand that Evolution cannot use Ctrl+F
or Ctrl+K
for this action because those shortcuts are already used by email actions ("Forward" and "Mark as read"), I still find myself wanting quick keyboard navigation to focusing and selecting the search entry's contents without needing to grab the mous everytime, and I think you could assign the F3
keyboard shortcut to this. Why did I think of F3? Because:
- That's a shortcut Firefox (and some core Windows apps, such as the File Explorer) support for searching, so it's not a totally unheard of shortcut for this functionality. It's also listed as "Search" under the navigation section in this table of common shortcuts in Wikipedia;
- That shortcut is not used by anything else in Evolution, and pressing that button currently doesn't do anything, so it wouldn't hurt anybody.
This would make it much easier for me to type a search query, hit Enter
, see whether the results make sense, then hit F3
to rework/replace the search query by something else instead (or to clear the search query by hitting Backspace
and Enter
after F3
), which creates a much more fluid experience for trial-and-error searching through some of my many email folders.
