Unable to create PDF: "No such file or directory" (with random control characters in path)

Error printing to pdf

On arch linux 5.4.69-1-lts evolution-3.38.1-1 printing to pdf fails with the following error

Printing failed.

The printer replied “Error opening file â/home/XXXXXX/Documents/testout.pdfâ: No such file or directory”.
