I have a flatpak installation of evolution 3.50.4 on one machine, running Ubuntu 20.04, which is working fine.
I have a flatpak installation of evolution 3.50.4 on another machine, also running Ubuntu 20.04, which I'm trying to set up in the exact same way, but I cannot get my CalDAV calendars to work. Following the instructions kindly supplied in response to GNOME/evolution#2701, I managed to start up evolution in debug mode:
WEBDAV_DEBUG=1 CALDAV_DEBUG=1 flatpak run org.gnome.Evolution
The error I get is simply:
[WEBDAV] 2024-03-28 09:42:25.184 - 0x561ec2ba1650: This is 'Posteo' (22268007961347c0f6b2d69271d4b8f18964a310)

[WEBDAV] 2024-03-28 09:42:25.290 - 0x561ec2ba1650: Failed to get books from 'https://posteo.de:8843/': Operation was cancelled
Emails are loading fine from the same web account. The calendars where configured automatically by evolution's "New Collection Account" tool, and the server address 'https://posteo.de:8443/' displayed in the error message is correct.
How do I go from here?

I have a flatpak installation of evolution 3.50.4 on one machine which is working fine.
I have a flatpak installation of evolution 3.50.4 on another machine, which I'm trying to set up in the exact same way, but I cannot get my CalDAV calendars to work. The calendars remain empty. The setup I have worked about a year ago on the same machine, with the current configuration, but with an earlier version of evolution. (I did not use this computer during the past year, until now, and I suppose evolution updated automatically along with loads of other software.) The only error message I get related to calDAL is "Network unreachable", but even this error message appears only infrequently. I can check that, when I get this error message, (a) I have a stable internet connection, and (b) the calendar in question is reachable from my other machine.
When I try to add a “Collection account”, evolution correctly detects CalDAV features of my account from my email address, and correctly sets up email, but fails silently regarding calendars – they don't even show up as an entry in the calendar pane.
I read in the documentation that I could try to debug with the command
> WEBCAL_DEBUG=1 evolution-calendar-factory -w >& logfile
but the command "evolution-calendar-factory" is unknown on my system. I suspect this is because evolution is installed as flatpak. What woud the correct command for the flatpak installation be?

I use the `,` and `.` shortcuts to jump to the previous / next messages in my mail account, and noticed the marking of messages as "read" had a problem when jumping to another folder.
Messages are correctly marked as read after the configured delay (which I reduce to 0.2 seconds in my config) when jumping within a folder, but as soon as all messages are read and you jump to another folder, the **first** message landed on never gets marked as read, unless you manually click it or otherwise get the timer to reset somehow.

Using Arch Linux
Evolution: 3.52.0
Maybe because of the glib update `2.78.4` -> `2.80.0`?
Or the upgrade of the `util-linux-libs` from `2.39.3` -> `2.40.0`?

Wrong error message on restoring backup when 'tar' is absent
I tried restoring an Evolution configuration from backup, on a clean Fedora VM after `yum groupinstall gnome`.
The `tar` utility was absent.
Evolution (3.50.3) didn't tell me that. Instead it told me the file was invalid or corrupt.

#### A use case I would like to have:
1. Select multiple messages
2. Forward as attached EML files
3. A new message with individual EML files attached
#### Alternative:
1. Select multiple messages
2. Save as multiple EML files
3. I attach the EML files myself in a new message
The backstory is that I would like to save multiple messages as EML files to be able to forward them to another person who uses Gmail or Outlook.
#### Workaround if one uses the Gmail web app:
1. In Evolution, copy the messages from any account to a Gmail folder
2. Open the Gmail web app
3. Find the messages and select them all
4. Forward them in a new message
* The messages will be attached as EML files in a new message.
#### Shortcoming with saving multiple messages as a single MBOX file:
1. It becomes impossible to pick individual messages afterwards
2. MBOX is Unix-specific, neither Outlook nor Gmail can easily read it
MBOX is most useful for backing up / archiving multiple messages or a whole mailbox as a single file.

Evolution: 3.50.2 (3.50.2-1.fc39)
When composing a new e-mail I am now getting a warning banner:
```plaintext
Not adding OpenPGP public key into the mail.
The OpenPGP public key for “[redacted]” is too large for the transfer.
```
Probably because my key has a number of signatures on it, arguably making it a more trusted (than a key with no signatures on it) key.
So is whatever feature that the above warning is about only apply to (arguably) less trusted keys? People with better trusted keys are out of luck?

Saving a message in eml format adds an additional line break characters to the message headers. Evolution trying to do a word wrap to any lines in message source which are longer than specified length. Don't think this is a correct because it adjusts original message source.
I did not see such behavior in Thunderbird, Apple Mail, Kmail clients.

Tested with Evolution 3.50.4 on Fedora 39, with GNOME Calendar 45.1 and 46 / nightly.
As you can see in this demonstration video, when I toggle the display of a calendar in EDS via GNOME Calendar, Evolution's calendaring UI _sidebar_ successfully reflects the state in realtime, however the _view_ forgets to update to match that; it only updates when toggling those checkboxes directly in Evolution's sidebar.
![Evolution_3.50.4_and_calendars_display_toggled_by_external_apps](/uploads/c00680f47c21d517d8c2e47bd950e253/Evolution_3.50.4_and_calendars_display_toggled_by_external_apps.webm){width=100%}
I think this used to work fine in previous versions of Evolution, but I'm not 110% sure.

When I open Evolution each morning, it opens up my iCloud account and MS Exchange account just fine. But it keeps asking for mail authentication and calendar authentication for MS Outlook. This issue sometimes lasts a couple of minutes, but can last for upwards of 30-40 minutes. Eventually it realizes I'm on the internet, logs in, and syncs emails, then is fine after that. Along with the authentication requests (see screenshots), there is an error message at the top saying it can't download messages when not connected to internet.
If I put the computer to sleep and then come back on, it may or may not ask for authentication again.
This happens only with the MS Outlook account, not iCloud or MS Exchange.
I'm using Evolution 3.50.4 (by Flathub.org) on a System76 Intel desktop.
Thank you for checking into this,
Ken Hall

It would be nice, if in all views of the application, the description field is interpreted as markdown and the config is a "global" one.

This has been happening for years, but recently it seems a lot worse. When starting Evolution it takes a hundred gigabytes of memory, 6GiB of actual RSS. That's... a lot for an email client. It's very slow and keeps stalling, with GNOME shell offering to kill it.
```
PID USER PR NI VIRT RES SHR S %CPU %MEM TIME+ COMMAND
24766 dwmw 20 0 95.0g 6.3g 160896 S 55.8 20.2 61:57.24 evoluti+
```
It grows over time. This is Evolution 3.44.4-0ubuntu2 from Ubuntu 22.04.
I seem to recall that there used to be some way of getting a running total of the number of objects of each type, so we could try to work out where all the memory is going. Can't find it now. Suggestions for debugging?

This happens in the HTML composer and in the plain text composer, but, curiously, not in the Markdown composer (there, only the symbol of the combining character is underlined, which is normal).

I'm packaging Evolution for Chimera Linux, which builds software with Clang and with `-flto=thin` by default. However, that causes Evolution to print this output on startup then get stuck forever:
```
(evolution:2415): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: 00:49:27.029: cannot register existing type 'CamelRssStoreSummary'
(evolution:2415): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: 00:49:27.029: cannot add private field to invalid (non-instantiatable) type '<invalid>'
(evolution:2415): module-rss-CRITICAL **: 00:49:27.029: camel_rss_store_summary_load: assertion 'CAMEL_IS_RSS_STORE_SUMMARY (self)' failed
```
This doesn't happen when Evolution is built with full LTO (`-flto`) or without any LTO at all.
I think the problem happens because `src/modules/rss/camel-rss-store-summary.c` is built in both `src/modules/rss/camel/CMakeLists.txt` and `src/modules/rss/evolution/CMakeLists.txt`.

There has been issues on the past requesting some form of background checking for emails (such as tray/appindicator) but the solutions back then didn't fit well enough the way GNOME was evolving/has evolved. Since then things have improved, mainly with the introduction of the Background Portal as part of XDG Desktop Portal, there are already applications which have adopted it such as GNOME Geary or Easyeffects, and most prominent desktop environments provide support for it.
This could be a great addition to Evolution, as it would allow not only a way for Evolution to check and notify emails while running on the background in an agnostic way but also would open the possibility for Evolution to be auto-started when the user logs in.

Evolution-3.50.2
Hi,
as discussed on IRC, currently an unspecified pattern "foobar" with "Free Form Expression" search actually does a search on subject, to and Cc.
Please change that to do the same as the commonly used "Subject and Addresses contain". This would additionally add search on From: headers compared to the current implementation and would be more coherent as a default search.
