No support for tabs/tabbed browsing combined with meta-search across open PDFs
Submitted by Marcus Dapp
though I like evince a lot, it does lack an essential feature none of the Linux browsers seem to offer today: The ability to browse several opened PDF documents inside one evince session.
Several application types offer this functionality today recognizing the benefits of being able to quickly switch inside the same applications session:
- web browsers
- file managers, incl. gnome nautilus!
- even bash terminals
- text editors
Bug 306060 asking for the same thing ten(!!) years ago was left with the status "RESOLVED WONTFIX". Along with several commentators on the old bug, I sincerely question this decision's adequacy for 2016. Even bug 633198 asked for a way to browse several documents with ease. PDF readers that do offer this functionality are in wide spread use: acroread and foxit. But they are all proprietary. :-(
Tabbed browsing COMBINED with an advanced search across all opened PDF document would make evince a much stronger contender to replace above mentioned PDF readers - not only on the Linux platform. Therefore, people who read PDFs regularly for reference -- these are not only academics or students! -- would benefit a lot by this feature -- which is not even unique, but already implemented for years in the competitive proprietary solutions.
Thanks for considering this issue anew! digisus
