This mostly reverts 932f2d0c

The bug that prompted the inclussion of the code seems fixed in GTK3 as Bastien Nocera commented in https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=724096#c13

I certainly can no longer see the border after this patch
