Can't resize evince window when launched from ssh with X11 forwarding

Description
When using ssh with X11 forwarding (ssh -X) I can't resize the windows evince and other gnome 3 applications with PuTTY+VcXsrv (VcXSrv is an Xming alternative I use for better clipboard support).
The maximize button & right click to resize also do not work over ssh -X.
Distribution: CentOS 7.2.1511 evince 3.14.2 Accessing the host via PuTTY on windows 10 and 7 with same behavior VcXsrv 1.18.1.1 and 1.17.2.0 with same behavior
I'm uncertain if this is specific to particular Gnome 3/gtk3 applications, or a more general setting.
Other examples that can not be resized:
gedit 3.14.3
gnome-system-monitor 3.14.1
gnome-font-viewer
However these can be resized:
gnome-terminal 3.14.3
gnome-character-map
VcXsrv is in multi window mode. Also tried -resize with xrandr & scrollbars VcXsrv options with same behavior.
Other non-gnome applications resize ok, so I don't believe VcXsrv is solely to blame.
Using Xming 6.9.0.31 the evince window can be resized. All applications mentioned are resizable in Xming. They also all have the extra Windows menu/title bar (minimize, maximize, close buttons). With Xming, The Windows menu bar maximize button works, while the internal evince maximize button does not.

Thanks!
