I am using Xubuntu 13.10. I moved the directory /usr/share/icons to a separate ext4 partition (to save space on Linux partition) and created a symlink.
When evince is started, the toolbar icons are broken (square box containing red "X" is displayed). The toolbar buttons function properly but look bad (see attachment).
If I remove the symlink and copy /usr/share/icons back to the Linux partition, the toolbar icons look OK. Apparently, evince cannot find the icons if /usr/share/icons is a symlink.
This does not seem to affect any other software that I use (e.g. thunar, gedit, file-roller, gnumeric, etc).
