evince is painfully slow with unavailable samba / cifs mounts

Description
evince slows to a crawl after mounting some cifs shares, turning off the server providing those shares, and reading .pdfs from the local drive that are nowhere near that server. This wouldn't be so bad except it's easy to forget that the server was turned off.
Instead, evince should be unaffected by network drives that don't hold any documents it is not currently viewing.
OS is Ubuntu 10.04
