Regression when annotating documents: empty content in sidebar if annotation has no content
Following MR !310 (merged), if an annotation (highlight, strike out, squiggly) have no content, the sidebar does not show any content. It could be nice to have some content shown in the sidebar.
Some solutions:
(1) Fallback to author's name. This solution is not my personal preference because it is not about showing content...
(2) Showing the text of the annotation as its content (e.g., showing the text that is highlighted). Maybe this text could be in italics to differentiate it with content like a note.
(3) Showing "No comment" to indicate to the user that the annotation has not been commented. This label can be in italics to differentiate it from the content of a note, but not mandatory (for me) because the label is self-explaining.
ORIGINAL ISSUE TEXT:
MR !310 (merged) introduced the automatic opening of a note window every time a user annotates, and the display of annotation content in the sidebar instead of author's name.
I found (1) one problematic behavior, and (2) one thing I consider as a bug:
- Automatic opening of a note window every time a user annotates. Not everyone wants this automatic opening. It's disruptive in the two following cases I experienced with annotations: (a) as student, highlighting text only to know what to remember, so no attaching content to it, (b) reading of paragraph in a paper, highlighting all the text or the relevant words in this paragraph, then attaching a note next to this paragraph with content concerning all highlighted text or words [no content directly attached to highlighted text). There could be other cases where a user only wants to highlight/strike out/squiggly text, without directly attaching notes.
- Empty content in the sidebar if no content is attached to a highlighted text (including strike out and squiggly). For example, (a) if we highlight text, firstly the author's name is shown in the sidebar. After that, (b) if we don't add content to the note, author's name disappears from sidebar, then nothing is shown. Regarding (a), author's name shouldn't be displayed. Regarding (b), here is some solutions if no content is attached to highlighted text (also for strike out and squiggly): (I) author's name as fallback (if this option is retained, (a) is no longer valid ; but not preferable option because it is about showing content), (II) showing the highlighted text as content (but no differentiated from content coming from a comment - could be another issue), (III) showing "No comment" in italics (if possible).
