Enhancement: support smartcard client-side certificates

Description
I have for some time used Firefox to interact with various websites which require the use of a client-side certificate (and private key) which is stored on a smartcard. I would like to see epiphany extended to support this.
For some notes on configuring Firefox and other software to interact with the smartcards I use, see:

I have seen some evidence that this was once supported by Epiphany as an extension:

However, this method is no longer viable due to the deprecation of the epiphany-extensions package:
