Make the "Planet GNOME" theme more compact

Some of my annoyances with the PGO theme (beyond bug #690801) is the fact that it is optimized for big blocks of text rather than one-liners, and that most IM conversations are two-way one-liners most of the time.
Basically,
- The "balloon" sits significantly higher than the avatar
- There is a big "footer" in each balloon for the timestamp
- There is a big white space between each balloon. We could perhaps move the timestamps there and make the balloon footers shrink
- The "arrow" connecting the avatar and the speech balloon is very big, it could maybe be thinner, allowing to make all the rest more compact in the case of one-liners.
Possibly, we could also decide to "fade out" the footers to provide a feeling of visual whitespace, reducing the need for actual whitespace between balloons, providing more compactness. I'm attaching a mockup, but it's not pixel-perfect, it's just a proof of concept to give you a rough idea.
And with all that, I'd think the "PlanetGNOME" theme should be the default instead of "Classic" :)
