a simple feature suggestion for dia. I think I first saw this in Visio,
but it's been many many years since using Windows so I might be mistaken.
Anyway, in Visio there are two moveable lines - one vertical and one
horizontal. They don't do anything, you just move them around. But
they're really useful for two things: (1) Lining things up so they
line up vertically or horizontally, and (2) Marking out the "edge"
of the paper, so you can mentally say to yourself "don't draw anything
beyond this edge".
Cyrille Chepelov replied:
So in effect, this would be just like a line object, except that its draw
routine would somehow detect that the canvas it's been drawing on is an
interactive canvas (in which case it draws) or it's not (in which case it
does nothing).
Hmmm. Sounds interesting (this dynamic_cast`<InteractiveRenderer>` doesn't
sound difficult now we've got GObject renderers, thanks to Hans). Besides,
this doesn't even need to have all the formatting properties of lines, just
something to make obvious that it's a formatting aid, not something printed
(maybe even a static label property to remind this to the user).
Lars Clausen replied:
That's an interesting idea. Maybe tear-off the diagram-side rulers. Not
high on my list, though. If you want to do this, go ahead.

that. We have had some Bonobo work, though it doesn't (AFAIK) work right now,

## Description
Hello, I wrote some notes which make sense to me at least. They describe how to build a small basic flowchart......
It might 'bring together' many of the basic ideas of the documentation.
You do show a small flowchart diagram already in your Help but this explanation explores the most basic steps for doing something like that. Maybe it could be edited into a Help article.
Making a simple Flowchart
Note: If at any time, an object disappears or partially disappears then try View..Redraw . Otherwise, if you have removed an object, use Edit..Undo to bring it back.
I want to have an ellipse and I want to contain text inside it.
So I put an ellipse on the canvas and then I put a text object on the canvas and start typing a caption;
then I drag the text into the centre of the ellipse. I turn off 'snap to grid' so that the text will align
just where I want it.
Now, I want the ability to drag the ellipse and the text as if they are one
object; but at the moment, if I drag one, the other object does not drag as well.
So, I select both objects and, at the menu, do Objects..Group. Now they will drag together as if they are one single item.
[Side Note: 'Ungroup' would undo the grouping of selected items.]
I create another ellipse and caption in a similar way.
I put a line object between them (its properties make it looks like an arrow).
Now I drag the first ellipse but the arrow does not travel with it:
the arrow is not glued to the ellipse and so the arrow relationship breaks.
So I need to connect each end of the arrow to each of my ellipses.
I do this by right-clicking the line and clicking 'Add Connection Point'.
Now, if I drag the arrow as far as ellipse 1, a red color indicates that they have glued together;
and if I drag the other end of the arrow to ellipse 2, again, a red color shows that they have glued together;
so now I can move an ellipse and its arrow line travels with it.
Note: All of this assumes that all of these objects occur in the same layer.
Note: You can also use image objects and browse to a bitmap that suits your theme; then you can use images as well as basic box/ellipse shapes. In fact, I saved some clipart as a bitmap and then I was able to use it within a diagram that I was making.
Regards,
Michael Curtis mick_curtis@yahoo.co.uk

## Description
Please describe the problem:
When you build Dia, and specify --enable-gnome, it should install
documentation to /usr/share/gnome/help/dia.
However regardless of this flag docdir remains being defined as
/usr/share/doc/dia, and this is where docs get installed,
As a result help->contents Always fails as it cannot locate help docs.
Steps to reproduce:
1. Compile and instsall dia with "--enable-gnome" configuration option
Actual results:
Dia help docs are installed to /usr/share/doc/dia
Expected results:
They should be installed to /usr/share/gnome/help/dia when this compile
option is specified.
Does this happen every time?
yes
Other information:
doc/Makefile.am does define "helpdir" and it changes based on --enable-gnome
flag, but this variable is actually never used :(
Possible solution would be to amend xmldocs.make to use helpdir instead of
docdir ?

One way to fix this would be disabling the generation of the documentation (during "make distcheck" or by default) but maybe it is not too difficult to fix to behave correct?

Appdata file for Dia
I've written up an appdata file for dia so it can be part of gnome-software in a more complete manner. Please find it attached.
It'll be great if this file can be included in future releases, and optionally, if the build system could install it to /usr/share/appdata. The installation isn't necessary, since us maintainers can do it manually too.
Please feel free to edit the file to improve the descriptions, add more screenshots etc. The screenshots must be 16:9 in aspect ratio though. Here's a post explaining how to make such screenshots: http://blogs.gnome.org/hughsie/2013/10/08/how-to-take-169-screenshots/

## Description
Hi!
There are strange behavior of Dia 0.97.3 on 64-bit Debian Jessie (8.7) with XFCE4 while rendering any diagram.
Any action with Diagram with AntiAliased feature OFF dramatically decreased redraw performance up to totally unusable. Even other UI applications influenced.
It looks like Dia is running on a modern OS which is installed on very old hardware (i.e. Pentium 200).
Typical behavior mentioned:
1. Turning AntiAliased ON (either in Preference or in Menu) - all works flawlessly (opening file, manipulating diagram, drawing, resizing, etc).
2. Turning AntiAliased OFF with NO file opened - all works flawlessly (opening menu items, changing preferneces, etc.).
3. Turning AntiAliased OFF with file opened - all becomes slowwww down. UI is totally unusable. Response time is about 5-10 sec. on every action.
If you need any other information - let me know.

If there are text objects in an SVG file, they are sometimes shown incorrectly or not shown at all when the file is opened in Dia.
Example files are attached. The following problems occur:
example1.svg: Texts are not shown and an error message appears when opening:
Load Into:
Failed to apply transformation for 'Standard - Text'
example1_noText.svg: Same file as above, but texts have been converted to paths. All objects are shown properly.
Additionally, the curves in these two examples extend outside the plot area even though they should not.
example2.svg: Y-axis title text on the left is not shown. Legend texts are black even though they should be colored.
Firefox can display all these files correctly.
Dia version is 0.97+git on Debian Stretch.
