Improve contrast for dark variant

Hello everyone, hope you are fine. I'll keep my explanations simple, feel free to ask questions if not clear.

Use cases

I think that the folders look too similar to "unknown" files. When browsing rapidly this slows down my workflow when there are hundreds of files and folders. Example:

Desired behaviour

Improve the folders' icons so users can easily differentiate visually. Silly example:

OR improve the unknown files' icons:

Benefits of the solution

  1. I stumbled upon this suggestion before opening this issue : nautilus#1868 (closed)

Color coding lets one organize and memorize stuff easier, some articles:

  1. An Android file explorer, Material Files, was suffering of the same problem. The developer fixed this by colouring and redesigning file icons so they look different from the empty grey folders.

Possible drawbacks

As I am only talking about icons, I don't see any feature that could break.

Duplicates of this suggestion?

I looked for but I didn't find any duplicates of this suggestion. The closest I could find is this issue: nautilus#817 (closed)

Is it worth it?

I read Carlos Soriano's comment saying "I'm leaning to close this, most likely we shouldn't introduce more complexity in features that doesn't go with anything else that it's already there."

Well, I think that I am not suggesting to add a new feature here but rather improve the already-existing visuals. Of course the amazing GNOME developers have the final word and I am open to discussion in the comments 🙂

BONUS: Improve text files' icons

Kindly look at my first screenshot. I also think that text files look too similar to unknown files.

If you've reached here, thanks for reading me pal!

I wish you a wonderful day/evening 🙂
