Design suggestion: inline blocks instead of line blocks for wide windows

With the recent design changes introduced with version 3.6 the contact list displays even less connected people than before, hence making it less useful to see at a glance who's online.
When the contact list window is expanded (suggesting that the user wants to see more contacts) however, there's no change in how the the list displays, resulting in a lot of useless and ugly whitespace.
Something like a grid of connected contacts for empathy would be very useful, a bit like Moblin did in 2009: http://hroy.eu/posts/gnome-empathy-design/666x391-moblin_people.png
